On the male members the icon in the right hand corner is a pink lady. The female members the icon is blue man.

Can someone please explain what I may be doing wrong

You're not doing anything wrong.

The 'pink lady' by the father indicates the number of spouses (fenale) that he had and the 'blue lady' beside the mother indicates trhe number of spouses (male) that she had.

Thus if the father had a second marriage following death or divorce there will be a"2" beside the pink lady.
